A humble request to TEENAGERS – “There is no LIFE after DEATH”

Wednesday, March 16, 2011

19yr-old jumps of building reason Restrictions from family
16yr-old hangs herself reason too much exams pressure
18yr-old slits his nerves reason – break off
17yr-old threatens to kill himself reason – tiff with mom
All the above news are now-a-days a daily discussion over the bed tea in any house. Parents are scared to even shout at their children. Too much exposure to negative media has given rise to such situation in India.

Most of the Physiatrists in India believe the reasons for such deaths and depressions, is the lack of communication between parents and their kids.
I was going through an interesting article featured in Mumbai Mirror, where Physiatrist Harish Shetty replied to a anger parent when he stated, He lied to me about stolen 500rs; “There is nothing like a lie in my dictionary. Lie is truth postponed, suspended, delayed. He was just scared.” Teenagers today are very affected by the factors like ego, so called love affair, exam pressure, peer pressure, scolding, Parents ignorance etc.
We humbly request the teenager and also other kids not to waste your life just for silly reasons and most importantly we request parents to understand their situation first and then react. Keep yourself in their position, as you have come through such stages, and evaluate their mind frame and make them understand.

AS THE DEMAND FOR FASHIONABLE WATCHES CONSISTENTLY RISES, SO DO THE EMPLOYMENT OPPORTUNITIES OFFERED BY THE INDIAN WATCH MAKING INDUSTRY.

Monday, March 14, 2011

WATCH IT!
Speak of a career in watches and the immediate visual that comes to mind is that of a guy sitting at a local watch repair shop struggling to fix a watch, right? Wrong. Post liberalisation, the Indian watch market has long surpassed this stage. The influx of major foreign players in this segment has given the watch industry in India the much needed boost. This fact is corroborated by a recent report - Indian Time Wear Industry 2010 -published by All India Federation of Horological Industries (AIFHI) and consultancy firm Technopak Advisors. According to this report, the current size of watch market, which stands at an approximate figure of Rs 4,000 - 4,200 crore, will almost double to Rs 8,500 crore within the next five years. The annual 10-15 per cent growth will be driven by a growing economy, increasing disposable incomes and consumerism, and the increasing aspirations of the youth andmiddle class people. No wonder the segment is also estimated to generate additional employment opportunities for around 80,000 people. As per the report, employment in watch retail alone can reach up to 2.15 lakh people in the next five years.
OPPORTUNITIES ABOUND
Apart from options in HR, marketing, finance, and managerial functions, the industry offers employment opportunities in manufacturing, distributing, retailing and repair and maintenance divisions. About the options on the manufacturing front career counsellor Jayanti Ghose says, “India is not just one of the largest markets of clocks and watches but one of the largest manufacturing bases as well. It is also the first port of call for many global watch brands for its components manufacturers. Hence, the profession does offer good scope.” With the demand for luxury and sports watches on the rise, designing watches too is gaining significance as a career option.
SKILL SPEAK
The skills required to succeed in the industry vary
according to the department you work for. That is to say, if you are into repairing, precision and an eye for detail are crucial qualities. However, these do not matter much if you are into retailing. A watch designer must be creative and detail oriented. Additionally, he/ she must possess good presentation skill. Watches these days have become more of an accessory than a mere time displaying device. Thus, the ability to know the kind of design that will click with the target group is quintessential.
CAPITAL GAINS
It is difficult to gauge the exact remuneration one can get in this industry. However, freshers are paid Rs 15,000 per month. Informs Ghose, "The salary of repair and maintenance professionals with a diploma from polytechnics could range from Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 per month. But, engineering graduates hired for the same jobs would attract higher salary in established companies." The salaries of graduates recruited in managerial positions would depend on the B-school they graduate from. The more reputed the B-school, the higher would be the entry level remuneration. Salaries of designers can range from Rs 15,000 to one lakh per month depending on the institute they graduate from.
INSTITUTE WATCH
Except for Rolex that has set-up a training centre in Mumbai to train aspirants and absorb them into the company, India does not have exclusive institutes that offer degrees tailor-made to meet the demands of the watchmaking industry. Thus, those looking for jobs in this sector need to enroll for courses specific to the kind of roles they wish to apply for. Those looking to pursue jobs at managerial levels should pursue management degrees. Jobs in repairing and maintenance usually call for a degree/ diploma in engineering. Designers need to have a relevant qualification either in product or jewellery designing. If you wish to pursue a professional qualification abroad, you can opt for the 3200-hour Watchmakers of Switzerland Training and Educational Programme (WOSTEP), that is recognised as the ultimate qualification in watchmaking. Some institutes that offer the WOSTEP qualification abroad include: >> Institute of Swiss Watchmaking, Texas and Hong Kong
>> The British School of Watchmaking, Manchester, England
>> Nicolas G Hayek Watchmaking School
>> Though not a WOSTEP partnership school, The School of Horology, Columbia, Pennsylvania too is recognised for its courses.

CUT – COPY - PASTE

Monday, March 7, 2011

In the film industry there has been a saying,” Good Directors are good Editors”. We don’t understand why, but as you get deep in to understanding the role an editor plays its crucial. Just imagine yourself in a situation wherein, your friend is convicted in a case and there has been a court fight where you weren’t present and days after the scene, you are told to pass the judgment on the basis of written synopsis. How do you cope with it? The same goes with an editor. An editor plays his role in the post –production, wherein the raw movie is made which can be of 6-7hrs or even more. These footage/clips reach editor and its editor’s job to creatively pick relevant scenes and place it in accordance with screenplay and make it a 2-3hrs film. Film editing is part of the process of filmmaking. It involves the selection and combining of shots into sequences, and ultimately creating a finished motion picture. It is an art of storytelling. Film editing is the only art that is unique to cinema, separating film-making from other art forms that preceded it (such as photography, theater, dance, writing, and directing), although there are close parallels to the editing process in other art forms like poetry or novel writing. Film editing is often referred to as the "invisible art because when it is well-practiced, the viewer can become so engaged that he or she is not even aware of the editor's work.

At post –production the editing process takes in three so called simple looking cuts –
1.      Editors cut
2.      Directors cut
3.      Final cut

The technical terms involve, Continuity editing, cross cutting, dissolver etc. Editing as a field requires a lot of creativity as an editor needs to visualize directors mind and work on the screenplay as well. Famous personalities like, Raj Kumar Hirani, Sanjay Leela Bhansali etc are primarily editors. When you choose to take up editing as a career be ready to give more than 20 hrs of sleepless days in front of the machine. The software used for editing are Final Cut Pro (FCP) and Smoke. Usually in every production houses in India use FCP as smoke is expensive software to work on.
Some of the best editing work done in cinema –
Hollywood                                                                Bollywood
1.      One flew over the cuckoos Nest                               Rang De Basanti
2.      The Insider                                                                 Love Sex Dhoka
3.      Apocalypse Now                                                        Black

Before we give this article the final cut, a small piece of advise If you love to use your creativity in shaping Directors work and vision then this is your field. Lots of technicalities and overtime, but nothing in front of your passion for editing.

HEART OF CINEMA - CINEMATOGRAPHY

Aspiring students interested to enter film industry ask us, in film making which aspect has much wider scope? This question has helped us understand the most vital problem prevailing in the industry.
Lot of aspirants enters in to the industry without the right kind of education in this field. From today all you aspirants can find an article on each of the crafts of film making and take a decision on the basis of facts and your interest area Today we start with the heart of cinema – “CINEMATOGRAHY”. Cinematography played the most vital role during the era of silent movies where their used to be no sound, dialogue the films depended on lighting, acting and sets. Before this let me tell you what a cinematographer does. Cinematographer is a technician who gives life to a director’s vision of a particular scene. Without the right tuning between the two no screenplay can be given due justice. The lighting, set design, placement of props in proper coordination makes a good scene. If any of the aspect goes wrong it directly depicts on the screen.
ASPECTS OF CINEMATOGRAPHY
Film Stock
Filters
Lens
Depth
Aspect ratio and framing
Lighting
Camera Movement

Cinematography is an art form unique to motion pictures. Although the exposing of images on light-sensitive elements dates back to the early 19th century motion pictures demanded a new form of photography and new aesthetic techniques.
In the infancy of motion pictures, the cinematographer was usually also the director and the person physically handling the camera. As the art form and technology evolved, a separation between director and camera operator emerged. With the advent of artificial lighting and faster (more light sensitive) film stocks, in addition to technological advancements in optics and various techniques such as color film and widescreen, the technical aspects of cinematography necessitated a specialist in that area.
In today’s cinema world it’s impossible to think about making a movie without cinematographer. This is a hardcore technical field in which you need to have an inclination towards geometry as it’s very important to understand angles for lighting purposes. The physics and chemistry part plays a vital role in creating the right set for a scene. This aspect clearly indicates that you need to be highly interested in learning the technicalities of cinema and your interest and creativity to give life to a particular scene.
The positions that you hold as a cinematographer is “DOP – Director of Photography” and commonly referred as DP’s
Some of the movies that is known for its fabulous cinematography are stated below –

Hollywood –                                                                                      Bollywood -
Godfather -1 &2                                                                                1. Raavan
Titanic                                                                                               2. Dil Se
The new World                                                                                  3. Bombay
Legends of the fall                                                                            4. Udaan
Braveheart                                                                                         5. Dev D
Nicolas Roeg, English film director and cinematographer, rightly quotes,” And later I thought, I can't think how anyone can become a director without learning the craft of cinematography.”
All the aspirants a humble request, know your basics well before you get in to anything thing you wish.

BIRTH OF A NEW ERA FOR OLD TECHNIQUES- ALTERNATIVE PHOTOGRAPHY

Raghubir Singh, Anish Basheen, Daboo Ratnani, Anand Sharan, Vikram Bawa, I know you must have understood by now where are we heading towards. You are right “PHOTOGRAPHY”. All the above personalities are experts in different fields but the only thing common in them is their “Passion for Photography.”
Today we take you to another genre of photography, which might sound new, called “Alternative Photography (Hereafter to be called ‘AP’)”. Emerging from west, this concept has also taken birth in India at the most spectacular place for any kind of photography, GOA. AP basically teaches you to use original historic processes, materials and technologies to take a image or snap. What we Indians lack here is the exposure of international standards for preservation, conversation and restoration treatment, storage and exhibition of photographic materials. GOA CAP, an institute in Goa for AP, strives to educate India’s future photographers about the historic techniques its usage, to promote AP in all its diverse forms as an art form. They promise to strengthen the art institutes in India in order to improve their capacity both theoretical and technical.
Guys its let us think beyond Fashion, Wild life, documentary photography and first educate India as to how important role does photography plays in exposing one country to the rest of the world.
The famous American Photographer and Painter, Edward Steichen, has rightly quoted,
“Photography records the gamut of feelings written on the human face, the beauty of the earth and skies that man has inherited, and the wealth and confusion man has created. It is a major force in explaining man to man.”
In today’s world it’s very important to first be Educated and then skilled. A person with high skills but lack of relevant education can cause serious problems to the society.
